Jasper Raats and the Longridge wine making team continue to impress critics with ten wines from their portfolio scoring 90 and more points in the definitive Tim Atkin’s 2016 SA Report, which was released yesterday.

The flagship wines were once again in favour with the Longridge Clos du Ciel Chardonnay top scoring with 95 points. This single vineyard white was also included in Atkin’s Wines of the Year in the Chardonnay category. According to Atkin, the 450 metre altitude where the block is located, “confers freshness, the site, winemaking and grape growing sheer class. A complex, saline, focused white of remarkable intensity and palate length.”

Next up was the Longridge Ekliptika 2014 with 94 points and impressed Atkins with “showing the tannins and concentration that are so typical of Helderberg reds.” Atkin describes this luscious Bordeaux blend as “a classy, focused, fine-boned cuvée that’s very fresh and mineral, with well-integrated oak and a long, nuanced finish.”

Also coming in on 94 points was the Ou Steen Chenin Blanc 2015. This wine comes from a single block of vines over 30-years old, but Atkin reckons that it “shows the concentration of something much more venerable. Made in an off-dry, Vouvray Demi-Sec style, it’s beautifully judged, showing flavours of quince and bramley apple and stony minerality.”

The Longridge Organic Chardonnay 2015 and Longridge Merlot 2014 both scored 93 points with Atkin of the opinion that the Merlot is one of the Cape’s most exciting Merlots.

Atkin awarded 92 points to the Longridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 and considers its polish and balance indicative of Jasper Raats’ winemaking skills. The Longridge Pinotage 2014 also walked away with 92 points and Atkin proclaimed it “much more accomplished than many celebrated interpretations of the grape. Floral, aromatic and well balanced, it’s a fresh, red-fruited style with subtle oak and good underlying concentration.”

Atkin also advised that the wines that Jasper Raats bottles under his own label are well worth tracking down. The Jasper Raats Driefontein Sauvignon Blanc 2014 scored 92 points, while the Cuvée Rika Pinot Noir 2014 and Die Plêk Cinsault both came in on 90 points.
